Erakor Bilingual School, Port Vila, Vanuatu
From the late 1990’s through the early 2000’s Jeni and her family forged a friendship with the Erakor Bilingual School, Port Vila, Vanuatu and the then headmaster, Mr Ham Bule.
Over time, Jeni and her family and friends assisted Erakor Bilingual School to: 1) build a library of books (English and French) and then, 2) to create the first computer lab in Vanuatu for school students. The images below are of Erakor students and teachers celebrating the opening of the computer room of the school.
Later, the mantle was passed to the Jeni’s daughter’s school, Wenona, in North Sydney, who went on to become a sister school of the Erakor Bilingual School and are still involved today. The school’s report states that the aim is for Global Service Learning:
Wenona School Global Service Learning
Wenona Middle School Global Service Learning culminates in a Service Learning Journey to our sister school, Erakor Bilingual School in Vanuatu. Wenona students integrate service into their academic curriculum by creating and implementing subject-related and inter-disciplinary service learning projects in the school in order to provide teaching assistance. Service learning provides students with opportunities to acquire real-life skills, apply their academic knowledge, and develop their sense of civic responsibility and make a difference in their school, community and world. Global Service Learning allows school curriculum to come alive for students and teachers and it connects school curriculum to meaningful experiences. These experiences make school more relevant to students’ lives and participants learn through active participation in service that meets community needs.
Thanks, Wenona!!!
